Does your website use WordPress? Major WordPress Update; Here’s what you need to know

Wordpress 5.0, named Gutenberg,  is here, and with it comes some major changes. The editor is completely different, so there will be a bit of a learning curve. Not only that, but if the plugins you are using on your site aren’t  ready for the WordPress update, things can break.

Some of your websites might have your sites on auto update. Some may not. In order to minimize complications here’s what you have to do:

  1. Make sure you have a backup of your website. With major upgrades, your site could be at risk for breaking. To avoid this, make sure you have a backup of your site – preferably from before December 6th, but either way- take one now.
  2. Be sure that your theme and plugins are all up to date. WordPress plugin and theme writers have been scrambling to make sure their software is compatible with the new wordpress version. So if you’re not up to date already, make sure you update everything asap.
  3. Speak to your developer about any theme customization that may not be compatible, so you can work out a solution.
  4. If you don’t want to learn the new platform just yet, you can install the Classic Editor Plugin. This will revert your post editor to the way it used to be. But you should be aware that this plugin wont be around forever, so it may be best to get used to the new format.
